Thetitlemusicsetsthetone:aregalchoirsingsoverashotofthecrown.Elgar's1901'PompandCircumstance'marchisheardduringthediamondjubileecelebrationsand,asVictoria'scoffinliesinstate,thefilmconcludeswithAnthonyCollins'statelymusicaccompaniedbythetextofRudyardKipling's'Lestweforget'.CombinedwiththeemotionalappealofscenesofVictoriaconnectingwithher'ordinaryfolk',thisisstirringstuff. Thefilmconnectswithcontemporaryeventsof1938.ThereleaseoftwocelebratoryroyalfilmswasintendedtoboostpublicaffectionforthemonarchyinthewakeofEdwardVIII'sabdication.Anglo-Germanrelationswereanothertouchysubject.Withanotherwaronthehorizon,influentialvoiceswantedappeasement,andthefilmcouldbeseentofitthatagenda.VictoriaherselfwasofmainlyGermandescent,nicknamed'thegrandmotherofEurope',whileAlbertisa'goodGerman',charminglyplayedbyAntonWalbrookasacultured,decentman.
